Code Monkey is singing to us

Okay, this isn’t really a news item, but we came across a video on YouTube recently that really spoke to all of us here at the MonkeyLab. It’s a song called “Code Monkey” by Jonathan Coulton who might be the first Web 2.0 singer/songwriter, at least the first we’ve run across.

If you want to get the whole low-down on Mr. Coulton, you check out his blog here, but the main thing is he releases his songs under a Creative Commons license that allows other artists to create derivative works from his. So Mike Spiff Booth, a program manager at Adobe, created this video for “Code Monkey” and posted it on YouTube for everyone. And now people are getting to hear the song and learning about Jonathan Coulton and visiting his Web site and hopefully he’s making some extra change through all that. Pretty cool how this open source business works, huh?

Our first release: Feature Me!

The monkeys here at the lab are pretty excited because we’ve just released our first bit of software out into the world. It’s a plugin for WordPress called Feature Me!, and while it’s a pretty simple piece of code, we’re happy with the way it turned out.

Basically, this plugin is designed for anyone running a WordPress blog with multiple authors. Sometimes your bloggers can get lost in the shuffle, so why not try and let people know about them? Feature Me! makes it easy to create a “Featured Author” section on your site that updates automatically according to the settings you give it.

Give the project page a read and download the file if you think our Feature Me! plugin might find a happy home on your WordPress blog. You might also drop us a couple peanuts in the comments section if you find it useful.

A new web site

MonkeyLab Software has a brand new Web site. Hooray! The new site is completely powered by the amazing WordPress, our favorite blogging and CMS software that makes setting up a Web site so easy a monkey can do it. (And here’s the proof.)

The theme we’re using is a heavily customized version of the Pool theme written by Borja Fernandez, so thanks to him for creating such a slick looking template that was pretty easy to revise. If only everyone wrote their themes with nice, clean syntax and a little dash of Spanish.

Hopefully we’ll have more news to report about the assorted monkey business going on around here in the very near future.
